Hall has established a distinctive voice in contemporary choral music, creating works that unite expressive lyricism, rich harmonic colour and an instinctive understanding of the human voice. Drawing on more than two decades as a professional singer—and as a full-time member of the BBC Singers since 2009—his music is written from the inside out. Daily immersion in five centuries of choral repertoire, from Renaissance polyphony to the newest commissions, has shaped a compositional style that is both deeply informed by tradition and unmistakably personal.

Hall’s music has been performed and broadcast internationally by some of the world’s finest vocal ensembles, including the BBC Singers, ORA Singers, Genesis Sixteen, The Queen’s Six, The Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, Chichester Cathedral Choir, Ars Nova Copenhagen, Worcester College Choir, Oxford, Durham University Chamber Choir, Home Choir and The Choir of Royal Holloway. His works have been heard on BBC Radio 3, his ident music is featured on the BBC’S online educational project Get Singing, and his songs continue to reach audiences in concert halls, cathedrals and festivals around the world.

His music is published by Banks Music Publications, Novello, Chichester Music Press, Encore Publications and Hal Leonard. The critically acclaimed Great Chishill Motets series has become an important resource for smaller choirs, reflecting Hall’s belief that beautifully crafted, artistically satisfying music should be available to ensembles of every size and ability. His setting of Dust of Snow was chosen as the opening track of The New Winter Songbook, introducing listeners to a collection celebrating today’s choral voices, while works such as As I Lay Upon A Night and For the Fallen have received national broadcasts on BBC Radio 3.

Recognition for Hall’s work includes winning the 2025 Kantos Carol Competition and the Audience Prize in the inaugural Nova Consort Composition Competition. Yet his greatest satisfaction comes not from awards but from hearing choirs make his music their own. Whether writing for professional chamber choirs, cathedral foundations, schools or community ensembles, he aims to create music that feels rewarding to perform, emotionally direct and memorable for audiences.

This belief lies at the heart of projects such as Choirs Against Cancer, through which performances of his music have helped raise more than £20,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. It reflects Hall’s conviction that choral music is at its most powerful when it brings people together—not only through artistic excellence, but through shared humanity, generosity and joy.

Jamie welcomes commissions from professional and amateur choirs, festivals, schools, churches and individual performers. Whether writing an intimate anthem, a new concert work or a piece to mark a significant occasion, every commission begins with the same question: what music will these performers most want to sing?

News: Jamie’s setting of Dust of Snow to appear as first track in new release: The New Winter Songbook.

News: Jamie’s choral work Capybara! wins audience prize in inaugural Nova Consort Composition Competition.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Jamie W.
